Most of these are either free to use or offer free trials for evaluation purpose. It is strongly recommended to install some of these on your personal device.



Animation

  • Adobe After Effects Widely used animation and video editing suite. Available for Mac OSX and Windows. 30 day free trial available.
  • Blender Open source 3D animation creation suite. Available for Mac OSX, Windows and Linux. Free.
  • Renderman Pixar's own programme for rendering video and animation. Available for Mac OSX and Windows. A full featured version is available for free for non-commercial use.


Audio Editing

  • Audacity Open source audio editing tool. Very useful for file conversions and simple editing tasks. Available for Mac OSX, Windows and Linux. Free.


Audio Routing

  • JackPilot Open source audio routing. Available for Mac OSX, Windows and Linux. Free.
  • Soundflower Open source virtual output device. Available for Mac OSX. Free.


DAWs

  • Ardour Open source DAW available for Mac OSX, Windows and Linux. Free.
  • Ableton Live DAW geared towards live performance, with ability to incorporate Max. Available for Mac OSX and Windows. Paid and 30 day free trial.
  • Adobe Audition DAW geared towards audio production for video. Available for Mac OSX and Windows. Monthly subscription and 30 day free trial.
  • Cubase Popular DAW with electronic music producers and recording studios. Available for Mac OSX and Windows. Paid and 30 days free trial.
  • FL Studio DAW favoured by electronic music producers. Available for Windows with Mac OSX in Beta . Paid and unlimited free trial with limited features.
  • Logic Pro Extremely popular DAW for recording, mixing, mastering and composing. Available for Mac Only. Paid and no free trial.
  • Pro Tools The "industry standard" DAW. Extremely common in recording studios. Available for Mac OSX and Windows. Pro Tools First is a free, streamlined version of Pro Tools. The full version is paid via monthly subscription and has a 30 day free trial.
  • Reaper Very affordable DAW that is useful for multi-channel works. Available for Mac OSX and Windows. Paid and 60 day free trial.

  • Unity3D Widely used game development environment. Available for Mac OSX and Windows. Free for students.
  • Unreal Engine Game development environment primarily developed for first-person shooters. Available for Mac OSX, Windows and Linux. Free.

  • FMOD Studio Game audio middleware with a clean GUI and easy integration with Unity. Available for Mac OSX, Windows, Linux, Android and iOS. Free.
  • Wwise Another audio middleware package. Available for Mac OSX and Windows. Free.

  • Android Studio The official IDE for Android. Available for Mac OSX, Windows and Linux. Free
  • Arduino Java-based language with its own IDE. Primarily used to programme Arduino computers. Available for Mac OSX, Windows and Linux. Free.
  • Csound Language for sound synthesis, audio processing, live coding etc. There are multiple development environments available, such as CsoundQT, Blue, and Cabbage. Available for Mac OSX, Windows, Linux, Android and iOS. Free.
  • ChucK Language primarily for live coding that can be used in terminal/ command prompt of ChucK's own miniAudicle IDE. Available for Mac OSX, Windows and Linux. Free.
  • Extempore Live Coding language for both audio and visuals. Available for Mac OSX, Windows and Linux. Free.
  • Faust Programming language for real-time audio synthesis and processing. Available for Mac OSX, Windows and Linux. Free.
  • Fluxus Live coding language for audio and visuals. Available for Mac OSX, Windows, Linux and Android. Free.
  • Gibber Live coding for web browser, using the Gibberish.js audio engine. Works in Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Free.
  • Lissajous Another JavaScript based live coding language for web browser. Free.
  • ProcessingOpen source language and IDE used to generate images. Available for Mac OSX, Windows, Linux and Android. Free.
  • Sonic Pi Live coding language based on Ruby. Available for Mac OSX, Windows, Linux and Raspberry Pi. Free.
  • SuperCollider Open source programming language and IDE design for audio/ music work such as creating synthesisers, generative composition and audio processing. Often used for live performance. Available for Mac OSX, Windows and Linux. Free.
TidalCycles code written in the Atom text editor
  • TidalCycles is a haskell based language built primarily for live coding, but can also be used for electroacoustic composition. It does not have it's own editor, however the official websites details instructions for using TidalCycles within Atom, a free text editor. Available for Mac OSX, Windows and Linux. Free.
  • XCode Development environment used for multiple programming languages. Also necessary to install some other software packages on Mac OSX. Mac OSX only. Free.

Visual Based Programming

  • Max/MSP Used to create instruments, process audio and generate graphics by connecting patch cables between objects. It is possible to integrate Max into Ableton Live with Max 4 Live. Available via subscription or one-off fee with student discount also available.
  • Pure Data Open source graphic based programming, built by the creator of Max/MSP. Available for Mac OSX, Windows and Linux. Free.


Sound Design/ Electroacoustic Composition Tools

  • Ambient Standalone effects processor with granular delay, amplitude envelope, pitch shifting, multi-band filter and delays and reverbs. Available for Mac OSX and Windows. £10.
  • Composers Desktop Project Standalone audio processor with vast array of effects and processes. Available for Mac OSX and Windows. Free.
  • Cecilia5 Open source audio processor. Allows easy automation via a GUI graph and waveform generators. Available for Mac OSX and Windows. Free.
  • GRM Tools Set of audio processors that can be used as standalone applications or plugins. Available for Mac OSX and Windows. Frees demos available.
  • PVC A collection of command line tools for audio processing. Mac OSX and Linux. Free.
  • SoundGrain Standalone Granular delay that allows you to draw the grain trajectories by hand. Available for Mac OSX and Windows. Free.
  • SoundHack An open source audio processor capable of phase vocoding and convolution. Mac OSX only. Free.
  • Soundmagic Spectral A suite of 23 audio plugins for real-time spectral processing. Available for Mac OSX only in AU format. Free.
  • Sound Particles A standalone processor generating particles in a virtual 3D environment. Available for Mac OSX and Windows. One year free available for students and academic staff.
  • Spear Sonogram based audio editing. Allows the user to select and modify individual partials of a sound. Available for Mac OSX and Windows. Free.
